My first ever charity afghan... knit in Caron's Simply Soft on a
Studio SK-155 using
Gladys Goodey's Aran Afghan pattern.
Having never done this pattern before, I was a little worried about managing the edges, so I used punchcard column 1 on the left side of my panel and punchcard column 9 on the right side, giving me a knit stitch on every row of both edges. I also used some ideas from the Loop-through-loop seaming technique described by Susan Guagliumi on page 125 of her book "Hand-Manipulated Stitches for Machine Knitters" -- after the cast-on row, I added one needle on each edge and manually forced those needles to knit on each row. I think this maintained a nice stable edge when it came to unlatching the edge stitch and latching up the loops. |
