I remember learning this on one of the mailing lists, but don’t remember who posted it or where they learned it — if you know who you are, please tell me and I’ll give credit where credit it due.

I do know that after trying this method, it has become my one and only way of hiding my yarn tails.

Let’s assume we’re looking at the purl bars on the wrong side of the knit with the yarn tail on the right-hand side marked by the arrow:

Thread the tail on a yarn needle and sew through six to eight purl bars at a diagonal:

Make sure the yarn tail is laying flat — not too tight and not too loose. Unless the knit is very loose, you should not be able to see the tail from the right side. You might give the knitting a a slight tug to make sure you haven’t pulled the tail too tight.

Now, sew back through the next to the last stitch, marked by the x and cut the excess yarn:
